What is live-in care and is it right for you?
Live-in care means having a dedicated Caregiver move into your or your loved one’s home to provide full-time assistance and support. We know the majority of individuals would prefer to stay in their home when given the choice, and that’s exactly what our London live-in care service is designed to allow.
Is 24-hour live-in care suitable for my loved one?
Live-in care is a great alternative to residential care for those who need ongoing support and companionship but want to stay in the comfort and familiarity of their own home and the places they love. Whether your loved one enjoys the village feel of Crouch End or the green open spaces of Wimbledon, they can continue their usual routines while receiving the care they need at home.
This type of support is especially beneficial for those with long-term health conditions or limited mobility. Between the adjustment period that comes with moving into unfamiliar surroundings and the disruption to routines, moving into residential care often only adds stress, which can exacerbate illness and health conditions. With live-in care, your loved one can get the support they need without the upheaval.
What does a live-in carer do?
Residential care is not the only option for elderly loved ones who struggle with daily tasks. And, most of the time, it’s not the best option, either. Our London live-in carers do more than provide essential support. Because care allows your loved one to stay put in the home they love, it can provide a new lease of life. Your loved one gets the physical assistance and emotional reassurance they need while retaining their independence and routines.
But, what does that look like?
Live-in care looks different to every individual, as it should. Our support is customised to individual needs and easily adaptable to changing situations.
That said, it often involves:
Personal care: Assisting with washing, dressing, and grooming.
Medication assistance: Ensuring medications are taken safely and on time.
Meal preparation: Preparing meals that suit dietary preferences.
Monitoring wellbeing: Watching for health changes and raising concerns to prevent issues or ensure early intervention.
Companionship: Offering conversation, company, and reassurance.
Mobility support: Assisting with safe movement indoors and out.
Housekeeping: Keeping the home tidy, clean, and comfortable.
Hobbies and social activities: Supporting hobbies and social outings.

Why costs vary?
Several factors can affect live-in care pricing:
Regional factors
Costs can vary by area, with higher prices often found where demand for care is greater and local living costs are higher.
Care requirements
More intensive care, especially for complex conditions, increases costs due to the need for specialist support.
Type of provider
Regulated providers, overseen by the CQC, may charge more due to strict standards and detailed care management.
Funding support for live-in care
There are two main sources of funding support for live-in care:
Local authority contribution: Financial support may be offered, dependent on an assessment of care needs and financial circumstances.
NHS continuing healthcare:This covers all costs for those with substantial medical needs, following an NHS eligibility assessment.
Other financial support
Some benefits help with extra costs for health or disability:
Attendance allowance: Weekly payments available for those over State Pension age who need assistance due to health or disability issues.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP): Financial support for those aged 16 to State Pension age with ongoing health conditions or disabilities

How to find a live-in Caregiver in London
Choosing a live-in carer service is a personal choice, and there are many factors to consider when choosing the right provider.
Services offered
Ensure your provider offers the right level of support for your loved one’s needs.
For your loved one, this might include specialist support for a long-term health condition or illness.
Experience and reputation
Look for a provider with a strong track record, well-trained Caregivers, and positive client reviews.
Personalised matching
A good provider carefully pairs Caregivers with clients based on needs, personality, and mutual interests.
Regulatory standards
Choose a provider regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for safety and quality assurance.
Our London offices are rated Outstanding by the CQC, demonstrating our commitment to providing the best-quality care.
Quality monitoring
Enquire about a provider’s commitment to monitoring the quality of care and how often they conduct assessments to ensure standards are high and care is responsive to changing needs.
Emergency and contingency planning
A reliable provider should have backup plans in place if a Caregiver is unavailable to ensure continuous care and support.
Transparent costs and communication
Look for clear pricing, open communication, and a structured process for feedback.
Family involvement
The best providers encourage families to be part of care decisions and ongoing support.
At Unique Care, our live-in carers’ relationships with family members are just as important as those with our clients.
